Why do plasma make electronics go crazy?

Ok so I just got a plasma ball and I thought it was cool how it lit up fluorescent lights but whenever my iPad would get near it it would open apps switch pages and lots of other stuff and whenever my remote gets near it it starts lighting up and looks like I'm pressing ons. Why and how is it doing this?
