Anybody know the name of a small red/purpleish plant that grows in Iowa during the spring?

I took a picture of a plant growing in the brush at Ledges State Park the other weekend for my Ecology of Iowa cl, however I am unable to identify what it is! It looks kinda fuzzy and is about the size of a softball. Any guesses would be great!
