While the Church did initially condone the expulsion of 'heathen' indiginous beliefs with extreme prejudice, some forward thinking priests argued on the part of their new flock for a preservation of some of their ways. Unfortunately it was too little, too late. The "Holy" Inquisition wasn't really in charge of this operation, nor did it play as active a role in the Spanish colonial world as it did back in Spain. By the 1700s it was a holdover from 'the old days' but didn't really have much to do, finally sputtering into history by the early 1800s.
